Mark Knopfler - On Finnish TV Interviews

Different Studios, Finland, December 2000

Soundboard

Tracks

1. Interview on the "45 minuuttia" program
2. Interview on the "Joonas Hytönen Show"
3. Lenni-Kalle Taipale Quartet playing a curious version of Sultans of swing
4. Interview on the "Huomenta Suomi" morning television show

Recordings of a few shows that Mark Knopfler did to promote his new album Sailing to Philadelphia. All recorded in December 2000. The Joonas Hytönen Show was recorded on 8th December 2000. I don't know the recording dates of the other two interviews, but it must have been in December 2000 since the promotion tour ended that month. Joonas Hytönen Show is particularly amusing. Joonas, the host, asks a bunch of silly questions that are not the most common ones, like who is the girl in the Money for nothing video clip and did you meet Madonna in Notting Hill? After Joonas' interview the house band for the show, Lenni-Kalle Taipale Quartet, plays an interesting arrangement of Sultans of swing. The other interviews are interesting too. The interviews are all in English with a few quick words in Finnish inbetween questions. Good sound quality on all tracks.

Wembley Stadium on 11th June 1988 was the venue for a unique gathering of musicians and performers from all over the world who under the banner of Artists Against Apartheid paid tribute to Nelson Mandela for his 70th Birthday. An audience estimated to be well over half a billion people in some 63 countries participated in an event with a simple compelling message: "Free Nelson Mandela". Dire Straits appeared as the closing act of that unforgettable day with Eric Clapton on second guitar. Until today, it was probably the most important and powerful concert of the Dire Straits history. Amazing version of Brothers in arms! More complete than the bootleg "Solid Rock".

This is all around the internet, but this is the rip of my CD.

A TV show by and with Chet Atkins and some of his closest friends. Very emotional for Mark Knopfler, he was playing with his childhood heroes, Chet Atkins and the Everly Brothers. The highlight is when Everly brothers sings MK's song Why Worry. Also emotional when Chet sings a song about his father, I Still Can't Say Goodbye. Mark Knopfler plays guitar on all songs. The sound is good, taken from official video (which is very hard to get!).

16. Wonderful land [H]
17. The bug [I]
18. Heavy fuel [I]
19. On every street [I]
20. All along the watch tower [J]

Very good compilation CD with great sound. Taken from the original silver pressed bootleg "Brothers in Mark". Rare stuff is the key word of this CD. The monitor mixes of On every street are one of the things that make this CD well worth having. My personal favorite on this CD is the version of I'll see you in my dreams Mark plays with Chet Atkins.

Stadtpark, Hamburg, Germany, June 16th 2001

Great soundboard recording of the Hamburg 2001 concert! On the first radio broadcast, there was some traffic announcement during the intro of What it Is. Luckily, it was re-broadcasted again later without any interruptions. This perfect version can be found on this bootleg. The only song that was not broadcasted is Done with Bonaparte. To make the concert as complete as possible, the audience recording of Done with Bonaparte is put on this CD. Highly recommened!

Dire Straits - Houston 85

Summit Theatre, Houston, Texas, USA, August17th, 1985

Soundboard

Disc 1

1. Ride across the river
2. Expresso love
3. One world
4. Romeo and Juliet
5. Private investigations
6. Sultans of swing
7. Why worry
8. Walk of life
9. Two young lovers

Disc 2

1. Money for nothing
2. Wild west end
3. Tunnel of love
4. Brothers in arms
5. Solid rock
6. Going home

Great sounding bootleg! This is a mix of the pre-FM and FM sources from this concert. Any songs, music and applause that was missing from the pre-FM source have been patched in from the FM broadcast recording. Two young lovers and Tunnel of love are a combination of both sources due to the incompleteness of the pre-FM source. All the comments of the radio reporter are edited out and the sound has been remastered (for the show with radio reporter, see Radio Show CD's section, Saturday's at seven - Houston 1985). The FM source was slightly EQ'd to bring out certain details. The Left and Right channels were also balanced. No digital noise reduction was used. The result: without a doubt the most complete and best sounding recording of this legendary concert.

Second night of the tour. The sound is taken from a video camera and sounds really good. Originally, the sound on Marbletown was recorded only on the left channel, which is corrected to two channels on this CD. The last few notes of Marbletown are missing. Very nice show with a rare version of Devil baby (played instead of Postcards from Paraguay), which is totally different from the studio version.

Excellent audience recording, the best of the London 1996 concerts both soundwise and musically. Great versions and some rare songs like Vic and Ray and Are we in trouble now. The Electra Strings are joining the band on some songs and special guests Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings play on Water of love. Also included are some bonus songs from other concerts. No can do from the day after this concert, You really got me played by Jim Cox on accordion from Münich that same year and three different versions of Hawaiian Lullaby. One live version and two different pre-recorded tape versions that were played also in Münich 1996.

On this date de Notting Hillbillies were musical guests in the USA on NBC's Saturday Night Live, where they performed "Railroad Worksong" and "I Think I Love You Too Much". Great versions and sound, i captured this episode from a rerun a few years ago, i left the voice of Candice Bergen introducing them on both tracks.

BONUS TRACKS:

1. Darling pretty [B]
2. Walk of life [B]
3. Imelda [B]

Soundboard recording taken from master source so the sound is really excellent, as good as it can get! I'm the fool is taken from the Polish radio broadcast and it has got some slight hiss. Calling Elvis suffers from some slight distortion at the high volume parts. It is the complete concert, it even includes the music they played before the concert as well as interview before and after the concert and it also includes some of the talking between songs that was cut away on the master source to make it absolutely complete. This show includes one of the best versions of Calling Elvis and Water of love. As a bonus an audience recording is included of the songs Mark Knopfler and his band played the day before, on 2nd August 1996, same location. They had to cancel that concert after a couple of songs because of the bad weather, it was raining a lot.

Dire Straits - The Demos

Pathway Studios, Islington (London), UK, July 27th, 1977

Soundboard

1. Wild west end
2. Sultans of swing
3. Down to the waterline
4. Water of love
5. Southbound again
6. In the gallery
7. Six blade knife
8. Setting me up
9. Eastbound train

Demos for Dire Straits' first album. Taken from the original silver pressed bootleg "Early demos". Information from the official Mark Knopfler site: "On the 27th of July 1977, Dire Straits recorded the now famous demo tapes of five songs: Wild west end, Sultans of swing, Down to the waterline, Sacred loving and Water of love. In what was probably October 1977, they recorded Southbound again, In the gallery and Six blade knife for BBC Radio London. Finally, on the 9th of November 1977, demo tapes were made of Setting me up, Eastbound train and Real girl. Many of these songs reflected Mark's experiences in Newcastle, Leeds and London, and were to be featured on the first Dire Straits album the following year." The recordings on this CD feature most of these demo songs. Very rare recording and a version of Setting me up that is really different from the version that was later released on the first album. The recording plays a bit too fast, apart from that pretty good sound quality.

Perfect soundboard recording! All songs are in perfect sound and the concert is 100% complete. Just before The long highway, Mark Knopfler says: "We will be thinking of you on the way up to Oslo... " Truely a great concert with good dynamics, highly recommended is you want a good impression of the Golden heart tour in perfect sound.

Dire Straits - On Every Demo

Studio, 1990-1992

1. Calling Elvis (demo)
2. On every street (demo)
3. The bug (demo)
4. Heavy fuel (demo)
5. Iron hand (live, Timothy White sessions)
6. The long highway (live, Timothy White sessions)
7. Millionaire blues (B-side from Calling Elvis)
8. Kingdom come (B-side from Heavy fuel)
9. Calling Elvis (remix by Bob Clearmountain)
10. I think I love you too much (live, Knebworth)

Tracks 1-4: alternative demo versions
Tracks 5-6: Timothy White sessions
Tracks 7-8: B-sides
Track 9: alternative single mix
Track 10: live version

This is the collection of demos, remixes, B-sides, alternative versions of the songs that was made for On every street, except for the song The long highway and the live version of I think I love you too much from Knebworth 1990. The Calling Elvis demo version is now for the first time ever available for fans. It is not so very different from the original version, but has got another short drum/counting in intro and is shorter, mostly interesting for the die hard fans. The other demos are for the first time available in better sound quality and also in correct speed. The two Timothy White Sessions songs have got improved sound quality and a few seconds longer outro on The long highway. I think I love you too much was originally meant for On every street but was given to Jeff Healey. In other words; songs 6-8 and 10 in this collection could have been on On every street but was "thrown away". Good or bad? Listen and find out...
